Logline

A conceptual film that explores the struggles of self-expression through the eyes of a homeless veteran artist floating through the afterlife in a diverse city.

Synopsis

Fish Eye is a 15-minute stylized film that is from the perspective of a homeless artist. After his sudden death on the streets, his soul wanders around the city viewing strange instances in different peoples lives as they pass by each other. It is an honest look into the conversations and deep emotions of

22 city dwellers. Their perspectives range broadly from backgrounds of the rich, the poor, young, old, businessmen and criminals. They each individually explain their own personal philosophies on why things are the way they are, and why they do what they do. This all forms a subtle but inescapable theme: Confidence is silent, and insecurities are loud. Fisheye was shot all in one take around 8 city blocks. We will be utilizing 22 improvisational actors from the Chicago-land area with professional backgrounds.

Director Statement

FISH EYE represents the injustice and the disenfranchised in America. As a child, I struggled with the very idea of homelessness existing in America, it both terrified and confused me. My affluent response to homelessness stems from the idea that we live in these great modern times, yet still cannot find a way to take care of one another. It made me fear that I could one day be homeless as well if luck was not on my side.

This feeling of confusion, curiosity, and fear is what drove me to make this story. As a child, moving threw the city can be intimidating and overwhelming, Their minds might be racing with questions and they won't have the vocabulary to express their feeling. As adults, these same feelings revisit us but we have become more capable of suppressing our curiosity and we’ve built up a database in our minds of 'go-to responses' for complex issues.”

Kenny Molloy — An award-winning filmmaker and native of Naperville, IL, Kenny Molloy is obsessed with

the diversity and creativity of Chicago, yet tired of nobody accepting diversity. He hears too much talking and not enough listening. In an act of frustration and inspiration, Kenny and his college buddy, Colin Parker, decided to make Fisheye, a one-shot short film following a homeless veteran succeeding life after death. When asked about Fisheye Kenny said, “The film is an expression of the deep feelings of chaos and disorder that, as a child, Colin felt walking through the streets of Chicago. Greatly inspired by the film Loving Vincent, Fisheye was filmed using a fisheye lens, and deep dreamed in the post to give it it’s a unique rotoscoped look.

Kenny has dabbled in the arts, wearing many different creative hats over the years. He started as an editor, working for his high school news team and improv clubs. He tried to stand up, music, screening, and directing, before blissfully finding his place at the producer’s table. Most recently, Kenny produced Fisheye, and said that “The biggest challenge on Fisheye was working with a big cast and small crew, on a very abstract and difficult film.”
